As a non-drinker, what is the explanation for the stigma attached to drinking by yourself at home?

I usually only drink alone to take the edge off work when I have even more work to do at home. And maybe to watch the game, but I’m usually too tired from work to drink and watch. I’ll just fall asleep if I do.

I think you’re fine if u drink with a purpose and routinely debate that purpose successfully.

For me, I also make a distinction between daily stress that can be mitigated with a drink and stress caused by being at a turning point in life, such as trying to escape a situation u dislike. Drinking and smoking are not an escape. They are embellishments.

Imo, if you truly are troubled by something, you should tackle that issue with a sober mind.

Why is it viewed negatively? Will that stigma ever go away?
It’s viewed negatively because liquor is promoted as a social drug. Drinking alone makes people feel like you either stressed out about something or you’re addicted to liquor. May not necessarily be true but that’s how it’s viewed.

Depends.

If you’re having a nightcap, glass of whiskey or wine before bed, or a cocktail to take the edge off from a long day, thats one thing.

If you’re stopping at the liquor store after work everyday to grab a bottle of Jack, $9 Vodka or a 24 pack and kill it every night til ur pissy drunk, angry, and pass out then you need jesus and some milk
