I think there's something more to it than just the play style/quality of the product.

Yes those are issues, without a doubt, but the NFL product is complete shyt and has higher ratings than ever. So saying that the dip is just due to poor product isn't the whole picture.

Both of them actually play the game the way that casuals love, above the rim, and close to the basket. Those two were supposed to carry league after Bron & Steph. Now they’re both personal non grata with the league and marketing/television executives. Both players being irrelevant, after coming into the league with such hype, and delivering on that hype early on set the league back years.

MJ’s brand was being smooth just like his game. NBA ratings dropping after the lockout like all the other sports. MJ was the coolest cat around. Charles Barkley wasn’t Mike, neither was Shaq, Magic, KG, AI, etc.

Hip hop people at fashion week and it’s viewed as fashion week - not “hip hop” fashion week. I agree that it isn’t how it used to be and some of it is old head shyt but I don’t see the kids loving this shyt was what I said in one of my older posts. I’ve got colleges aged younger cousins who are athletes who don’t give two shyts about what is happening in the NBA. And it’s weird because all of these people played on ball teams as kids.

Your experiences are NOT representative of the majority, let alone everyone else. That seems to be this disconnect on this subforum when criticizing the product, where y'all think your experiences and the circles in which y'all move in, are applicable to the standard in which the NBA is perceived. Just because you don't see kids loving today's NBA, doesn't mean they don't, all it means is you don't see them.

The NBA has the youngest fanbase in this country out of all the four major sports, but you're telling me kids don't love it like that?

MJ grew into being a superstar without any parallels to hip-hop, so it's strange to me how you keep trying to draw on that as if that's what made the league relevant. Even more to the point, before Kendrick resurrected people's love in the genre, hip-hop had both feet in the grave, with the last of the dirt thrown over it, all after it had stopped being a Black artform long ago, so that says less about the NBA and more about hip-hop.

Not to say that their indiscretions haven't played a part in them fumbling the passing of the torch, but even if they were both squeaky clean and could stay on the floor, neither of them would've moved the needle in that respect. It's largely because for all the highlight material they give us, they haven't proven there's anything underneath that artificial exterior. If you ain't winning, or at the very least, on the biggest stage [playoffs] going toe-to-toe with the best players in the game, then you'll quickly lose your shine.

If you can prove you're a winner, all that other shyt will be forgotten (or relegated to a whisper in the distance). Kobe proved this.

The only thing the likes of Ja and Zion set back is the love and identification of a certain demographic of American fan (made up largely of millennials). The league is still thriving without them. The number of NBA fans in this country has increased since 2019, more people in this country are playing hoops than ever before and more people are following the NBA, globally, than ever before.

I think your assessment is spot on about gamblers/FF players. So that goes to the question with the NBA, is there a marketing issue with the NBA that is not connecting with potential audiences that is causing this dip in ratings? Or is it just the product quality?

Before we even get into the conjecture around the on the court issues - whether perceived or not - is in the eyes of the beholder. The NBA is not going to connect with Casuals/Middle America/Middle-Aged White males like the NFL. There are factors that just work in the NFL’s favor (In the U.S.):

- Race element/Bigotry
- Team aspect over the Individual
- Convenience/Accessibility/Games-Scheduling
- Promoting/Marketing-Urgency
- Pagentry/Social Gatherings
- Patriotism (whether it’s contrived/fake)
- Gambling
- League Perception of/via the Commissioner through eyes of the viewers (Roger Goddell is viewed as more cutthroat and not as player friendly in comparison to Silver. Which ties back into the racial element/bigotry).

I have mentioned on here on several occasions that the NFL’s late game 4:00 pm EST/1:00 PST window have actually been brutal to viewers this season, as well as some of the Thursday games. Although I watch more of the NFL than the NBA, the NFL is not an uber drastically better product when it comes to on field play versus the NBA’s on court play recently, IMO.

You know the game Gil. Silver needed to pivot to a young American star and Tatum was too boring to get the torch. Z had the Duke/next great prospect who was entertaining hype. We haven’t seen a PG as athletic as Ja since young Russ/Rose. He needed those two to carry it at least until you got the Flaggs, Dybantsa and Peterson and they couldn’t do it.

Brother, with all due respect I don’t think you watch the NBA and haven’t for a long while. Zion Williamson has never been an NBA superstar and Anthony Edwards has taken over for what Ja Morant temporarily had a stoppage over. I say temporarily because he is playing at an all star level right now.

Zion especially because the NBA just signed an 85 billion dollar TV deal and he wasn’t been one of the faces of the league when the deal was signed.
