As 'Subscription Fatigue' Sets In, the OTT Reckoning May Be Upon Us

Deciding which streaming outlet you want to subscribe to can be just as hard as finding a show itself. With options from big players like Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu, Showtime, Amazon and YouTube Premium -- and looming new platforms from the likes of Disney, Apple, AT&T and NBCUniversal -- consumers are already starting to grow frustrated with the crowded streaming marketplace as "subscription fatigue" sets in, according to Deloitte's 13th edition of its Digital Media Trends survey.

Viewers are taking advantage of these options: the average video consumer subscribes to three video streaming services, said Deloitte. But they're growing frustrated over just how many options they have. Nearly half of those surveyed, at 47 percent, said they are frustrated by the growing number of subscriptions and services to watch their shows. And this audience grows attached to the content: 57 percent of consumers said it frustrates them when shows and movies disappear from their streaming libraries.

Netflix, Prime and Tidal.

Not adding anything else without dropping on of those. It isn't sustainable.

Our Rebuttal to USA Today’s Cord Cutting Subscription Fatigue Story

Last week we warned you to expect a flood of anti-cord cutting stories. Today, we have one more to confront. This one is from USA Today pushing the idea that it’s too hard to manage multiple subscriptions.

Earlier this week, USA Today posted a story called “Cord cutters feel weight of subscription fatigue as video, TV streaming options multiply.” As you would expect, that quickly caught our attention and we decided to dig deeper.

The main argument of this story comes from a report by Digital Media Trends that looks at the current state of streaming and TV overall. According to Kevin Westcott, Deloitte’s vice chairman for U.S. telecom, media and entertainment, “Well over half (of consumers) say they are frustrated when shows they like disappear or are no longer on a streaming service and that they have to have multiple subscriptions to get what they want, so there is a little bit of subscription fatigue.”

The problem with that statement is it has nothing to do with cord cutting or streaming. You could have an extremely similar result if you asked if people are upset when a cable TV channel cancels a show or stops airing reruns of a show you love. (Who remembers the outrage when Adult Swim stopped airing King of the Hillreruns?) How about when a channel you loved on cable TV was suddenly in a more expensive package?

The other issue it ignores is the fact that many cable TV customers are fatigued with finding their price higher than expected with hidden fees and channels that are in a more expensive package than they started off in.

Cord cutting is not perfect, but the growing trend of stories going after any flaw in cord cutting but ignoring the issues with cable TV are unfair. Even though cord cutting is not perfect, it continues to grow as traditional pay-TV providers lost about 2.9 million subscribers in 2018.

So, the question now is what was your frustration with cable TV before you canceled? Leave us a comment and let us know.

This Dunya...and Beyond
I got Netflix, Prime, and Smithsonian. I love it. All of them are great bargains really. Thinking about getting Mubi too.

Cable can suck it. The final straw was when my already astronomical bill increased by $180 with no warning. This was right after TW became Rectum.

This article reads like industry propaganda.

They already predicted this years ago

Streaming is gonna turn right back into cable . Especially when password sharing is already a big problem (most people just pay for 1 service and share it with their friends and fam)

You're gonna have end up with 2 separates bundles of streaming services

People will go back to cable if every single studio/network keeps making their own shyt and the rights to shows keep them shifting from platform to platform.

Cable lost the battle but will likely win the war :beli:

This is pretty much what’s going to happen. I don’t know why dudes thought $8/month for the OG Netflix that has everything was gonna be around forever.
