A big part is everyone on the internet is basically going to a handful out of a dozen or so sites on repeat. Back in the early days you actually "surfed" the web. You could end up in all sorts of places. It really was the wild west. Everything is centralized now. All links lead back to the same dozen or so places.

it always has been.
Nah. The introduction of algorithms fukked everything. Prior to 2014, everything was mostly based on a “chronically order” (you see most recent post first). Now algorithms try to show you what you think youll like, regardless of how old.

When it became policed and overly moderated

Basically when all the everyday “cool” people started using the internet
Seen the transition happened in the 2010's when smart phones start being to become accessible to "normal" people.

The Internet back in 90's-2000's was unfiltered, raw and wild. Nowadays, it's corporate, political and bland.

The internet splintering off and being able to curate your experience vs everyone being on the same internet for better or worse.
