his kids are grown adults now and most likely progressive so they're probably in his ear about social issues. and his wife comes from a family of immigrants so she probably puts that viewpoint in his ear too.

I think it has more to do with him getting older and having time to reflect. He was the man at a young age, became rich, famous, didn't really have time to understand the world. He still can't, he's Michael Jordan. Baby steps, we eventually he'll come to a conclusion. He can be an asset, the idea is to grow Wiser. Today's mindset is your past can't be overcome.
