The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for 10 a.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday along and north of a line from Newnan to Covington to Athens.

Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said Wednesday’s precipitation should begin as a wintry mix across metro Atlanta during the afternoon. That system will have the potential for 1 to 3 inches of snow, “and that would include at least the north side of metro Atlanta,” he said.

“The timeline for this next system is a little different than what came through this morning,” Monahan said early Tuesday afternoon. “This is a mid-day arrival for our next system.”

He said rain should begin to move into west Georgia around 1 p.m. Wednesday, with a wintry mix possible across the northern suburbs by around 5 p.m.

“This is going to be another one of those situations where we’re sitting right on the fine line between a rain and snow mix and more of a snow situation,” Monahan said.

Monahan put the chance of precipitation at 90 percent Wednesday and 80 percent Thursday morning.

Temperatures should climb to around 43 degrees across metro Atlanta Tuesday afternoon, Monahan said, then drop to around 31 by early Wednesday. Wednesday’s high will only be 38, he said.

As models come closer into agreement, it seems that we are setting up for rain and snow to advance in from the southwest by late afternoon to last into early Thursday. This can produce snow accumulations north of Interstate 20, with mainly rain to the south.

An expected 2 to 3 inches of snow and/or sleet accumulation is expect throughout the FOX 5 viewing area. Higher amounts up to 6 inches can happen in the north Georgia mountains. However, there is a great deal of uncertainty in amounts. Some models predict higher amounts, while others predict less.

As with all winter weather systems, details on timing, amounts, and location are likely to change. Depend on the FOX 5 Storm Team for updates and download your new, free FOX 5 Storm Team app for the latest video forecasts and interactive radar.
