BRAVES 8, METS 2
A shaken Eric Young Jr. turned and sprinted back to first base right away, knowing immediately that whatever had just happened resulted in something serious.
Something gruesome.
A second straight poor pitching performance by Jeremy Hefner in the Mets’ 8-2 loss to the Braves on Wednesday became an afterthought when Braves starter Tim Hudson had to be immobilized on a backboard and carted off the field after Young stepped on and bent back the pitcher’s right ankle with the veteran righty covering first base on a grounder to Freddie Freeman for the second out of the eighth.
After the game, the Braves said Hudson underwent X-rays at Citi Field and suffered a fractured right ankle. He will undergo surgery in Atlanta when the swelling subsides. “I’m a little bummed right now. . . . You never want to injure anybody,” Young said. “I knew I didn’t get any of the base. I know I got all of his foot.

“I pretty much knew it was probably broke right as I did it,” Young added, “and that’s why I sprinted right back to him and try to console him as much as I could and apologize.”
Young said he “felt better” after Hudson told him both before leaving the field — and after the game when Young met with Hudson and the pitcher’s wife — that no apology was necessary.
“I obviously wasn’t trying to hurt him on the play. He just told me to keep my head up and keep playing the game the hard way, the right way. He said there was nothing I can do about it. That made me feel somewhat better, but still bummed that he’s going to be out for a while,” Young said. “I just hope he has a speedy recovery.
