Dumb ass nikkas and bytch on that panel

Do these dumb motherfukkers know before rakim , KRS , etc etc New York Rap was club and partying
This is too true. Late 70s was disco fever rap. Coked out, getting the crowd turnt, hype men. And even the subsequent “important too smart” rappers like Public Enemy in the 80s, would sonically turn a party out. Even with a message. But I think Public Enemy was in a league of their own honestly. Not many rappers/rap groups had the noise or sound that could carry a party and have a message. Rakim too. Like you could literally dance to that shyt. And ppl did. They weren’t like “Ahh man, turn that whack ass PE off, we tryna dance”. You could dance to some pro black stuff. Going back to James Brown and before. The message never hindered the party. If there was a groove, there was a groove. Even if the words were conscious. Not Like Us had summer 2024 turn out. And the last verse is basically calling Drake a colonizer. :dead:

Even if hip-hop stayed in NY, mainstream NYC rap would be dudes ripping off 50, Jim Jones, Max B, ASAP Mob, Cash Cobain

Lyrical rap hasn't really popped in the mainstream since 96.
Yes and no. There would still be a standard and a wave of artists bringing that while trying to revitalize/incorporate the bars.

I think this is the core issue of why hip hop is in the state that it’s in.

People don’t respect the roots of hip hop & only care about specific branches of it.

When you hear people talk about Hip Hop they usually bring up 90’s hip hop or 00’s hip hop….but not 80’s hip hop.

-creativity
-having fun
-being original
-having something to say
-rocking a crowd

These are literally the fundamentals of rap and should be so easy to make timeless music.

Add in having a decent level of vocabulary as well some knowledge of soul music and there shouldn’t be a reason why Hip Hop isn’t filled with incredible talent right now. Frustrating.

The South has been the center of the rap universe for 20 years. Why do they care what New York thinks? It's not 1995 anymore.
I feel like at times, the south is still fighting this hip hop civil war more than New York is. New York has already conceded the south won. Southern artist get play up there. NY rappers have been collabing with the south for nearly 30yrs now. I don’t know why we still mad. :dead:

We “won” so to speak.

It's old school east coast dudes that keep bringing up that old shyt.

The South was making money and having fun while the New York cats was on regional shyt.

The South always gave props to the east coast.

I think there's a time and place for everything.

The club is clearly not the time to play backpack introspective rap.

Same time, it stupid to act like Southern artists like Goodie Mob and them weren't saying stuff in their songs.

Really has nothing to do with NY vs south bc 50 Cent made club songs that got play everywhere

Maybe on the coli and maybe the oldheads. But irl, most New Yorkers I know(at least of a certain generation) just go with what’s popular. Like everyone else. They rock with popular music. Whether it’s Future, Young Boy, Kendrick, Drake, etc. NY ppl Nowdays feel like they’re a melting pot of music and just go with what “the culture” has deemed popular. I feel like the south and southern ppl Nowdays are more regional and inflexible with music taste. Of course I’m casting a wide net. It’s not true of everyone. Nobody really listens too or respects the Funk Flex types anyways.

If NY is the king of hip hop and intellectualism , how did the west coast take over?
New York rap scene is like Notre Dame football, bragging about shyt that they did decades ago to cope with being completely irrelevant for years lol.

"King of hip hop intellectualism" but the most prominent rappers they put out in 10 years is a dude that did offshoot drill music and a fukking Mexican with 69 tatted on his face :mjlol:

No innovation to speak of either. Embarrassing.
