or rather one with an extensive list of scheduled maintenance, even then a part can break outta nowhere. especially on them B7 A4's.

If you're looking for a 7+ year old sedan with decent performance stick with the Is/g35 or even the tl/tsx. German cars that old are not worth the headaches.

I'm in the market to cop an A6 soon, but from my research Audi's 2000-2007ish were a bit sketchy. Not to say all of them were trash, but on average I've found those were less reliable than most. How many miles on it?

I'd avoid them personally. The engine in the 4.2/ 3.0 is solid but it's a pretty dated platform now.
