If this photograph of a female pastor’s hideous wound caused by a rubber bullet on Wednesday night in Ferguson, Missouri doesn’t convince you that the police are out of control, nothing will.
Renita Lamkin is a Methodist Episcopal church pastor and she willingly put herself between police and the protesters to mediate peace between the two sides. The demonstrations over the past week are the result of a Ferguson police officer named Darren Wilson shooting 18-year-old Michael Brown to death a week ago.
Lamkin says she was “standing in the middle of the street, with people behind me, and the police were in front of me.” As police ordered protesters to disperse, Lamkin told the heavily armed officers “They’re moving, they’re leaving. But police didn’t give a damn and they fired rubber bullets into the crowd anyway. “And then there was a pop!” Lamkin described.
Despite her efforts, police attacked the peaceful protesters and shot Lamkin in the process. She was struck by a .60 caliber rubber bullet, and it left a bloody and bruised crater-like wound on her abdomen.
Lamkin had been part of a group who were standing outside the Ferguson Police Department demanding the release of Alderman Antonio French. French was later released, but not before police caused chaos, confusion, and injuries.
One protester, Tef Poe, who took the first image above, described the scene as follows:
For all of those that claim this a joke or think we are being irrational this lady is a pastor she was praying while they shot her.. We were outside waiting for the release of Antonio French and the armored vehicles showed up! Tell me why this is acceptable? How is this right?
But Lamkin, despite her wound, continued to stand with the protesters as the night wore on. She certainly is a brave woman.
Across this country, police are becoming militarized and are not being held responsible for their actions. They are beating people, pointing guns at people, and they’re shooting and killing people. This madness has to stop. If you want to help put an end to police militarization, and to help hold them accountable, please sign this White House petition for taking up Mike Brown’s Law.
