Genes linked with a greater risk of developing autism may also be associated with higher intelligence, a study suggests. Researchers have found new evidence linking genetic factors associated with autism to better cognitive ability in people who do not have the condition.

The relationship between autism and intelligence is not clear, researchers say. Although up to 70 per cent of individuals with autism have an intellectual disability, some people with the disorder have relatively well-preserved, or even higher than average, non-verbal intelligence, the team says.

Autism is a developmental disability that can cause significant language and speech difficulties. Non-verbal intelligence enables people to solve complex problems using visual and hands-on reasoning skills requiring little or no use of language.

Researchers at the Universities of Edinburgh and Queensland analysed almost 10,000 people recruited from the general population of Scotland. Individuals were tested for general cognitive ability and had their DNA analysed.

The team found that even among people who never develop autism, carrying genetic traits associated with the disorder is, on average, linked to scoring slightly better on cognitive tests.

Researchers found further evidence of a link between autism-associated genes and intelligence when they carried out the same tests on 921 adolescents who were part of the Brisbane Adolescent Twin Study.

The study is published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. The research was funded by the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorates, Scottish Funding Council, The Wellcome Trust, The Medical Research Council and Age UK.

Dr Toni-Kim Clarke, of the University of Edinburgh's Division of Psychiatry, who led the study, said: "Our findings show that genetic variation which increases risk for autism is associated with better cognitive ability in non-autistic individuals. As we begin to understand how genetic variants associated with autism impact brain function, we may begin to further understand the nature of autistic intelligence."

Professor Nick Martin, of the Queensland Institute for Medical Research, said: "Links between autism and better cognitive function have been suspected and are widely implied by the well-known "Silicon Valley syndrome" and films such as "Rain Man" as well as in popular literature. This study suggests genes for autism may actually confer, on average, a small intellectual advantage in those who carry them, provided they are not affected by autism."

A major multidisciplinary paper is scheduled to be released late next month that conclusively links the increasing autism epidemic to the consumption of organic foods. Following a meta study conducted at the University of California Berkley, which compiled and examined data from over a thousand other independent studies on autism, researchers noted in their final data sets a distinct correlation between the consumption of fruits and vegetables not treated with common agricultural pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and an increased prevalence of autism. To elaborate upon and clarify questions surrounding these data sets, researchers at U.C.B. enlisted the help of the neurobiology department at John Hopkins university.


Research scientists at John Hopkins examined the effects of not only common agricultural pesticides and chemical fertilizers, but also chemical metabolites derived from agricultural chemicals upon neurological and brain function. The findings, detailed in the forthcoming paper, were found to be serious enough that J.H.U. contacted the Laboratory Services Department at W.I.T. to see if the results of their research and experimentation were consistent and replicable. W.I.T. researchers were able to replicate the findings utilizing independent methodology.

As counterintuitive as it initially sounds, the human brain has undergone an adaptation in neural function to incorporate and utilize many of the chemicals found in pesticides and chemical fertilizers for vital neurochemical operations within itself. Unfortunately, much in the same way that a person taking steroids to increase their muscle mass can cease to produce their own testosterone, so too does the brain’s adoption of these chemicals for use as neurotransmitters render it unable to produce its own in certain areas, beginning in the second trimester and lasting until roughly the age of three. When these now vital chemicals are not passed on in utero by the mother through her diet, or dietarily through the age of three, the brain is not able to construct crucial neural pathways and connections, resulting in a wide range of sensory/integration disorders foremost of which is autism.

Upon further investigation, geneticists at U.C.B. discovered specific mutations on genes ARX and BSCL2. Those who did not possess the hereditary mutations on these two genes do not require the presence of agricultural chemicals in their diets for the proper development of the brain and brain function. Geneticists at U.C.B. estimate that approximately 28% of the general American and European populations carry the specific genetic mutations resulting in these sensory disorders.

Neurobiologists at John Hopkins were later to observe that individuals with the ARX and BSCL2 mutations had brains that utilized 18% less caloric energy than those without the mutation. These energy savings are realized by the brain’s ability to utilize chemicals extracted from dietary sources, instead of having to synthesize its own. Those with the mutation were also noted to have an average of twenty more functional IQ points, on average, than those without it. Geneticists at U.C.B. hypothesize that the huge functional advantages derived from this mutation led to its incredibly quick spread throughout certain populations. It wasn’t until society started reemphasizing naturally-grown and organic produce that the dangers of these mutations became exposed.

Abstract

Screening of an RNAi library in a Drosophila melanogaster autism-associated model identified a target that reduced autism associated phenotypes at the juvenile stage. Bioinformatic approaches indicated that the RNAi construct interacted with a loci whose mammalian homolog has been implicated in the development of autism spectrum disorders through copy number variation. Following identification of the target, an antigen based vaccine was developed. Exposure of larvalDrosophila melanogaster to the vaccine through maternal feed treatment resulted in reduced autism associated phenotypes.



Materials and Methods

RNAi lines targeting the known transcriptome of Drosophila melanogaster were developed and administered to adult populations through spiking of growth media. D. melanogaster lines with autism associated dopamine receptor mutations were used to model autism spectrum disorders. The progeny of the RNAi treated D. melanogaster were monitored from pupal to adult stage for autism associated phenotypes. RNAi lines that reduced autism associated phenotypes were confirmed and their targets were identified using NCBI BLAST tools. Using these targets, antigen based vaccines were developed and were confirmed to have curative effects when administered from the pupal to juvenile stage.


Results

Using an RNAi screening approach, a vaccine was developed that prevented the development of autism associated behaviors in a Drosophila melanogaster model. Treatment with the developed vaccine caused a 94% reduction in autism associated behaviors across the tested population (n=1,293; p= 1×10-7). Discussion

The identification of a novel vaccine for autism spectrum disorders using an RNAi reverse genetic approach confirms both the utility of Drosophila melanogaster as a model system for drug discovery and marks an exciting achievement in biomedical research. The homology of this system to mammalian neurological systems enables this vaccine to be immediately deployed in clinical trials.

Why? Evidence points to glyphosate toxicity from the overuse of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide on our food.

For over three decades, Stephanie Seneff, PhD, has researched biology and technology, over the years publishing over 170 scholarly peer-reviewed articles. In recent years she has concentrated on the relationship between nutrition and health, tackling such topics as Alzheimer’s, autism, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as the impact of nutritional deficiencies and environmental toxins on human health.

At a [recent] conference, in a special panel discussion about GMOs, she took the audience by surprise when she declared,
“At today’s rate, by 2025, one in two children will be autistic.” She noted that the side effects of autism closely mimic those of glyphosate toxicity, and presented data showing a remarkably consistent correlation between the use of Roundup on crops (and the creation of Roundup-ready GMO crop seeds) with rising rates of autism. Children with autism have biomarkers indicative of excessive glyphosate, including zinc and iron deficiency, low serum sulfate, seizures, and mitochondrial disorder.


A fellow panelist reported that after Dr. Seneff’s presentation, “All of the 70 or so people in attendance were squirming, likely because they now had serious misgivings about serving their kids, or themselves, anything with corn or soy, which are nearly all genetically modified and thus tainted with Roundup and its glyphosate.”

Dr. Seneff noted the ubiquity of glyphosate’s use. Because it is used on corn and soy, all soft drinks and candies sweetened with corn syrup and all chips and cereals that contain soy fillers have small amounts of glyphosate in them, as do our beef and poultry since cattle and chicken are fed GMO corn or soy. Wheat is often sprayed with Roundup just prior to being harvested, which means that all non-organic bread and wheat products would also be sources of glyphosate toxicity. The amount of glyphosate in each product may not be large, but the cumulative effect (especially with as much processed food as Americans eat) could be devastating. A recent study shows that pregnant women living near farms where pesticides are applied have a 60% increased risk of children having an autism spectrum disorder.

Other toxic substances may also be autism-inducing. You may recall our story on the CDC whistleblower who revealed the government’s deliberate concealment of the link between the MMR vaccine (for measles, mumps, and rubella) and a sharply increased risk of autism, particularly in African American boys. Other studies now show a link between children’s exposure to pesticides and autism. Children who live in homes with vinyl floors, which can emit phthalate chemicals, are more likely to have autism. Children whose mothers smoked were also twice as likely to have autism. Research now acknowledges that environmental contaminants such as PCBs, PBDEs, and mercury can alter brain neuron functioning even before a child is born.

This month, the USDA released a study finding that although there were detectable levels of pesticide residue in more than half of food tested by the agency, 99% of samples taken were found to be within levels the government deems safe, and 40% were found to have no detectable trace of pesticides at all. The USDA added, however, that due to “cost concerns,” it did not test for residues of glyphosate. Let’s repeat that: they never tested for the active ingredient in the most widely used herbicide in the world. “Cost concerns”? How absurd—unless they mean it will cost them too much in terms of the special relationship between the USDA and Monsanto. You may recall the revolving door between Monsanto and the federal government, with agency officials becoming high-paying executives—and vice versa! Money, power, prestige: it’s all there. Monsanto and the USDA love to scratch each others’ backs. Clearly this omission was purposeful.

In addition, as we have previously reported, the number of adverse reactions from vaccines can be correlated as well with autism, though Seneff says it doesn’t correlate quite as closely as with Roundup. The same correlations between applications of glyphosate and autism show up in deaths from senility.

Of course, autism is a complex problem with many potential causes. Dr. Seneff’s data, however, is particularly important considering how close the correlation is—and because it is coming from a scientist with impeccable credentials. Earlier this year, she spoke at the Autism One conference and presented many of the same facts; that presentation is available on YouTube.

Monsanto claims that Roundup is harmless to humans. Bacteria, fungi, algae, parasites, and plants use a seven-step metabolic route known as the shikimate pathway for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids; glyphosate inhibits this pathway, causing the plant to die, which is why it’s so effective as an herbicide. Monsanto says humans don’t have this shikimate pathway, so it’s perfectly safe.

Dr. Seneff points out, however, that our gut bacteria do have this pathway, and that’s crucial because these bacteria supply our body with crucial amino acids. Roundup thus kills beneficial gut bacteria, allowing pathogens to grow; interferes with the synthesis of amino acids including methionine, which leads to shortages in critical neurotransmitters and folate; chelates (removes) important minerals like iron, cobalt and manganese; and much more.

Even worse, she notes, additional chemicals in Roundup are untested because they’re classified as“inert,” yet according to a 2014 study in BioMed Research International, these chemicals are capable of amplifying the toxic effects of Roundup hundreds of times over.

Glyphosate is present in unusually high quantities in the breast milk of American mothers, at anywhere from 760 to 1,600 times the allowable limits in European drinking water. Urine testing shows Americans have ten times the glyphosate accumulation as Europeans.

“In my view, the situation is almost beyond repair,” Dr. Seneff said after her presentation. “We need to do something drastic.”

I think it depends on the type of Autism, I know for a fact that one level makes you more proficient in focus and therefore in book smarts. but the other two levels are devastating to learning. All three levels are devastating to social skills.

I had kids a 31, while my parents had me when they were 23. It the same trend with most families.


There is a specific time to have kids. Our bodies, including males, were meant to have kids from 18 to 29 at the latest. We somehow started to believe that we are above Mother Nature. Unfortunately , it's not true, and we suffering the consequences of that.

Now.. if only genetic mutation/manipulation allowed us to utilize the possible higher intelligence advantage WHILE casting aside autism. Perhaps natural selection will do the job for us.

I think it depends on the type of Autism, I know for a fact that one level makes you more proficient in focus and therefore in book smarts. but the other two levels are devastating to learning. All three levels are devastating to social skills.
I can attest to that. Autism has devastated my social skills which is why the way I am. I really do have some book smarts though. Unfortunately I don't have an IQ of 120 or higher for people to take me seriously. Then there's severe autism. That's a whole another ball field. Think about the patients you see in state hospitals. 65% of them have severe autism.
