There's a ton that goes into handicapping (pedigree, weather, past performances, track surface, etc.), but i'm sure the more you look into the more familiar you will become ​

dont want to piss in your cheerios but id advise passing on betting horses. the payouts get worse and worse as the tracks keep raising the takeouts. horse racing is dying out, and the tracks are thinking short term, making more money by raising the rake, which is just driving more people away from the races. unless youre just trying to do it as a hobby, and doing trifectas or pick 6's and looking to score big, id skip it altogether

It's a gamble, but put all your money on the horse with the biggest odds.

Not to mention that as much as they have tried to clean it up, horse racing still remains one of the most dirtiest sports around (betting scandals, doping, etc)
