Baby died from ingesting meth after mom used drug while breastfeeding: cops

Ashlee Rans of Plymouth, Indiana, is now behind bars after a forensic pathologist revealed that her 2-month-old daughter died after ingesting meth.
An Indiana mother accused of breastfeeding her 2-month-old baby after consuming meth has been arrested.
The baby, Nevaeh Hope Rans, was pronounced dead on Dec. 19 after the mom called 911 from her Plymouth, Ind., home.
Ashlee Rans, 36, was arrested on Jan. 14 and charged with "two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.”
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by local news station WNDU, when emergency responders arrived, Rans told them that her baby had died because she had rolled over her, while she was asleep.
Early that morning she brought the baby to her bed to breastfeed her, the affidavit states, but they both fell asleep facing each other.
She later woke up and saw her baby cold, with blood running from her nose.
An autopsy, which was performed on the day after the baby died, pointed to a different story. When the results came back, the report showed that amphetamine and methamphetamine were found in the baby’s system.
According to WNDU, Rans was aware of the possibility of contaminating her baby, by breastfeeding while consuming drugs.
At the time she only admitted to smoking marijuana. Only after the autopsy was performed did she admit using meth in a gas station two days before her baby’s death.
"The cause and manner of death were determined by the forensic pathologist, and he determined the infant died of acute methamphetamine intoxication, and the manner of death was homicide," Marshall County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Tami Napier said.
Rans faces between 20 and 40 years if convicted.
