ATHENS, Ga. (WFXG) - The Athens-Clarke County Police Department have charged 59-year-old Pamala Graves of Elberton after the death of a 15-month-old child. The babysitter was caring for the child at the time they were exposed to the drugs.
Over the weekend, ACCPD say they received a call that the child was being treated in Augusta after testing positive for exposure to Fentanyl, Opiates, and Benzodiazapine. They were later informed that the child died.
Preliminary investigation reveals the child's death was caused by exposure to the drugs.
Dr. Phillip Coule with Augusta University Health says that Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate that is sold for both illicit use as well as an imposter drug. Although it's sold as other things, Fentanyl is a more powerful sedative or painkiller. "It's a much more powerful drug and carries with it a risk of suppressing the respiratory drive of the individual or level of consciousness that can be fatal."
At this time, Graves has been charged with felony murder and possession of a schedule 2 controlled substance.
