A theft suspect followed their victim over 90 miles to steal cash in Jarrell, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

The crime is called “bank jugging.” It’s when a suspect is watching someone withdraw a large sum of money from a bank or ATM, then follows them to separate location and then steals the cash when the victim isn’t looking.

“They’re dedicated. This is their job. Their mission is to rip off citizens. What they’re doing is they’re doing surveillance at banks,” said Williamson County Commander Gary Haston.

WilCo detectives are looking to identify a jugging suspect spotted on security cameras in Jarrell.

Cmdr. Haston said a victim who pulled out a large sum of cash in New Braunfels is believed to have been followed north over 90 miles on I-35 to Jarrell. The victim was looking to buy a used car. Haston said when the victim left their car the money was reportedly stolen by the suspect. “Then they used a knife, flattened one of their tires so they couldn’t be followed and they took off with the backpack which they assumed had the money in it at the time,” said Haston.

Haston said the suspect is believed to have come from Houston where most cases of jugging are reported in Texas. “(police) have cracked down on it so much in Houston, it has pushed them out to Austin and San Antonio and smaller areas,” he said.

In Cedar Park, police say they’ve had eight reported cases of jugging this year. Four have been in the past couple months. Most cases are reportedly happening at local banks. A police spokesperson says suspects are looking for people openly carrying envelopes or bags when leaving ATM, banks or financial institutions. In some cases, suspects have smashed windows to steal the cash and run.

Haston urged people to be aware of their surroundings when at a bank or ATM. He said some suspects rent a car and change out the license plate to a paper one while they wait in a bank parking lot looking for someone exiting the bank with money. “Someone is sitting in those cars watching,” said Haston.

In the Jarrell case, the first suspect is described as a black male with dreadlocks and earring in both ears. The second suspect was wearing a white hat, black long sleeve shirt with colored graphics and dark pants.

My question is do they scope people who withdrawal at ATMs outside the bank, or do they somehow find people who withdraw money inside from a teller?

I’d imagine you don’t want to withdraw large sums of money from a local atm. You asking for it

either way.
Then catch them slippin when they leave the money in the car and pop the window and you good.
