I paid like $10 a cut in the hood in 2005, cuts aint advance that far since then. Barber hustling us. Top tier cuts should be 40-50 MAX and im talking elite barbers.
I think a factor a lot of people aren't keeping up with is real estate costs. Most barbers don't own their own shops. they're paying rent.

Look at the increase in housing prices from '05 to now. Look at the increase in commercial rent from 05 to now. Look at the increase in mortgage rates from 05 to now. Look at the record interest rates we have right now.

Secondarily you'd have to really look at tariffs. Very few of the products in a barber shops are made in America. Most of hair supply is sourced from many countries in Asia which are now heavily tariffed. And even before the tariffs ,these same products had to be sourced during the covid supply chain dysfunction.

Do I deny that there is profit seeking from barbers? No because whenever there's inflation in any industry , the producer is aware that the consumer doesn't know to what extent the inflation is and there is opportunity for upside beyond The increased costs. But the increased cost in haurcuts in the last two decades is definitely tied to other things like interest rates, tariffs, shipping dysfunction, etc.

I line myself up, cuts are usually a special occasion now, plus i have locs w a taper + goatee + tashe combo.

But my guy is professional, by himself, uses square for appointments, etc. charges around $50-60. But worth it because of the cleanliness and lack of "henny talk"

:mjpls:

It's a little bit less straightforward than that. They barber has to deal with increased overheads and from a personal point of view higher cost of living.

That being said, my cuts cost £15. Used to be £10.
No one is talking about foreign barbershops u crumpet eating ghoul

Some of yall are talking about gradual growth over time

I think OP and others talking about the VERY noticeable shift pre-pandemic and now

More barbers started doing appointment-based house calls and realized there was a market for that, completely abandoned the cheaper walk-in model we all grew up with, alot of em are just doing house runs now and aren't paying those booth rental fees.

And the other barbers don't wanna be seen as cheap so they started raises prices to match it

Once they seen nikkas were still paying :ohhh:

As someone with multiple family members who ran their own barbershops and salons, they are making a ton of EXTRA money now :francis: the greed can go unchecked because everyone needs their hair done to some degree
