Judging nfl qb stats from this era to any other is useless

It's soooo much easier nowadays to throw the ball because of the rules

Bad and mediocre qbs are completing 60% of passes and breaking team records in yards because they throw all the time

Nfl has become a 7 on 7 drill

Meanwhile, Brett Favre and Dan Marino completed 60% of their passes on the career. The rule changes have been really bad for the quality of product in the NFL. Everyone just runs almost all their plays out of the shotgun formation and throws 40+ times a game, most of which are short to intermediate passes regardless of what their personnel is. Matt Stafford has a 5,000 yard season and Eli manning came one long bomb away from it the same year. shyt has caused everyone to play exactly the same way. I used to go to the ale house every Sunday because I wanted to watch a lot of different teams play. Now I really don't give a shyt and it's become like basketball in the sense that unless you have a megastar quarterback, you're pretty much up shyt creek with no paddle. Watching joe flacco or jimmy Clausen or Matt schaub drop back to throw 45+ times in multiple games each last season with one good receiver on the roster and he went down after half the year

The strikeouts per 9 are higher for two reasons

1. because more hrs = bigger paycheck. Guys are going for the fences all the time now even in situational hitting situations that just calls for a basehit or sacfly

2. the game is specialized now with relievers coming in earlier where pitchers only go 6 or 7 innings so they empty the tank and throw hard as they can for those innings rather then lower velocity at times to save themselves to go deeper into a game

And then hitters have to face these relievers coming in throwing gas

K's per 9 innings when up when pitchers stopped having 40+ stars per season and pitching 20+ complete games.
Home runs weren't prevalent before Ruth because players weren't taught to swing for power.

One caveat.

This isn't true if the sport becomes less popular. I'd believe it if some of the boxers from earlier eras could beat today's crew, because no one really wants to box anymore. Long jump numbers suffered for decades because the best sprinters (who make the best long jumpers) didn't want to waste their time and get potential injuries doing LJ anymore.


But in any sport where the popularity remains equal or greater, players tend to improve, and a lot. No one is stupid enough to claim that 1980s swimmers were faster than today's swimmers, because we have numbers...but fools are stupid enough to act like 1930s MLB and 1980s NBA were the shyt just because they got big numbers against crap competition.

It ain't just that. Competition SUCKED back then. Scouts would literally drive around their local area looking to see who was playing on sandlots to find talent.


Ruth didn't just dodge the great Black pitchers, he dodged all the potential great Latino pitchers, Asian pitchers, and hell, probably 80% of the White talent. Nowadays scouts are scouring the countryside for every bit of the talent they can find - they didn't do that shyt back then.
