Karl Malone played mainly before my time. My first year seriously watching basketball was the 99-00 season when the Pacers got rocked by the Lakers in the finals, so I didn't get to see him play much, but the guy averaged 24 and 10 for his career with some decent passing and steal numbers. He also is the 2nd all time leader in points scored.
Among power forwards, Tim Duncan is widely regarded as the GOAT PF. Kevin Garnett is not seen in the same light, but is still considered an all time great and one of the best players of his generation. Charles Barkley is often called the best player EVER to not have a ring. Dirk Nowitzki is considered the GOAT shooting big.
Maybe it's just me, but I hear about these guys and their accomplishments WAY more than I ever hear anyone talking about Karl Malone. Why is that? Is it because he retired a long time ago? It can't be that, because people talk about Olajuwon, Kareem, Larry Bird, Magic, and Isaiah Thomas ALL THE TIME. Is it because he spent most of his career being assisted by one of the GOAT PGs in John Stockston? Duncan played a huge chunk of his career with Tony Parker.
I don't get it brehs. Was he not quite as good as his numbers suggest? Is it because he played for the worst state in the country besides West Virginia and the Dakotas?
I never hear anyone talk about him, and if they do, it's in the same light they talk about David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Chris Webber, and Clyde Drexler. Great players, but just not as good as their peers. Since they both played during the same era, how much better was Barkley than Malone? Was it CP3>>>>>D Will status? Or very close like a prime T-Mac and Kobe?
