Its got its ups and downs, but I thought that it was one of the last great sci-fi shows on TV
It's been great so far. I love all Star Trek, so BSG is pretty fresh. Sometimes it seems like they try a little too hard to be the anti-Next Generation (religious humans, tons of problems with the chain of command, acts of vengeance, etc.), but it's not a big deal.
My biggest gripe is how much they've used flashbacks and hallucinations so far, but that's not unique to BSG.

Just know that they had no idea where the show was going and made it up as they went along. It's a good show but the ending and some of the final mysteries are all over the place. I think they drew the identities of the final 5 from a hat literally.
I'm on episode 11 of season 3 now, The Eye of Jupiter, and I can kind of feel the wheels starting to come off. This season definitely isn't as good as the first two, at least so far. The story is kind of getting thin.
The cylons were a lot cooler and more threatening before I saw about an hour's worth of them bickering over the course of this season.
