Man distributed sexual images of ex-girlfriend to poison new relationship, court told - thestar.com
Oleg Korbut strode slowly down the hallway at the Old City Hall courthouse, bouncing his infant son in his arms. Between fatherly smiles and gently spoken words, he assumed a look of undeniable apprehension.
Before long, the 43-year-old osteopath and acupuncturist might not be able to hold his young son. He might be in jail.
Korbut was found guilty in August of an escalating campaign of harassment against his former lover in a two-year extramarital affair that contrasts starkly with the family man image portrayed during pre-sentencing submissions in court Tuesday.
The Crown described his actions as crimes of jealously and spite that culminated in the publication of more than two dozen nude photos and videos of his former lover. These were distributed to her family and friends, and burned to a Valentines gift DVD that was left at the residence of her new partner in February 2010. It was a jilted lovers attempt to poison the womans new relationship, the Crown alleged.
This individual has real issues with respect to women (and) control, said Crown Attorney Christine McGoey. The level of vindictiveness is astounding.
In his decision, Justice Peter Harris found overwhelming proof of Korbuts guilt. He is convicted of criminal harassment, and theft under $5,000 for stealing the victims phone, diaries and address book to use in his effort to end her new relationship.
Harris issued a publication ban on the victims name.
Korbut immigrated to Canada from Ukraine in September 1998, according to a presentencing report. His wife, Svetlana, came with him. Theyve been married 22 years and have two children.
We are together, we were always together and were going to stay together, Svetlana said, cradling their baby outside court Tuesday.
In May 2007, Korbut began an affair with the victim. The woman testified he took several sexually explicit photos and videos of her.
When they broke up, Korbut promised to delete them all, while the woman completely erased her own copies, she testified.
By January 2010, Korbut began to display signs of jealousy and possessiveness toward his former lover, the judge found. On Jan. 6, Korbut went to her home to confront her about her new relationship, she testified.
After he left, the womans diaries, address book and cellphone were missing. She told court no one else visited her that day.
On Feb. 6, 2010, Korbut sent her an email with the salutation: Hello you Shameful and Cowardly B----. He went on to warn her: You have no inkling of what it means to hurt a Magical Scorpion.
About a month later, the woman realized someone sent fake emails to 20 to 30 of her family and friends using her maiden name. They contained links to the sexual material she recorded with Korbut, as well as personal details she testified were gleaned from her missing diaries.
A dating site profile was also created in her name, stating that she was looking for men to have sex with several times a day. She received several phone calls, and a man once came to her at night, she said in a victim impact statement. It was unpleasant and I was scared, she testified.
