And why do you think it's the polite thing to do? What's polite about it? It's just some shyt started during Roman times during the plague or "keep the demons at Bay"

It's a social tradition. The same reason you say "hello" or "thank you".

You don't need a personal reason for everything.
Are you one of those types that feel some type of way when a random don't participate in one of these socal norms? Not getting at you or anything, I just noticed that some people get upset when a rando doesn't say hi, bless you, thank you, or don't reply with good when someone ask them how they doing.

All those little things are the essence of society itself.

Go a step further. If you're waiting on a self serve lane and someone cuts in front of you. Do you just chalk it up them being a free thinker?

If you get someone a birthday present - like a girlfriend lets say - then your birthday comes and they don't get you anything. Do you just think they are being themselves?

Social norms run the gamut from seemingly useless to downright critical, but all that little shyt is what makes us, us.

I know its hip to shyt on everything and reinvent everything but culture is necessarily the transmission of info from past to future. Each generation can't make up totally new rules...

Well ya could, but if you did you'd be like these Flat Earth mfs or these anti vaxers

I like this. In your first scenario, that's someone just being disrespectful and testing you as a person. Your second scenario, for me personally I don't expect anything from anyone just because I gifted them something in the past.

I know it's deeper than this but you don't need thank you's and bless you's for society to operate.

You do however need common decency and respect (regarding your first scenario) or else it'll be back to survival of the fittest.

The particular form is arbitrary. A social system doesn't *specifically* NEED any one element. Like "Bless you"

But the system will have A form. And however it got to the present form, its healthy to participate with your neighbors

I obviously agree with your first part. On the second paragraph, do you think it's unhealthy not to participate with your neighbors? Would you consider small talk with a stranger you'll never see again as healthy or unhealthy and why? I personally hate small talk because it's pointless and a waste of time in my opinion.

Small talk with a stranger simply establishes that you're spending time with a sane person. Its kind of uncomfortable to just sit and stare or stand 3 feet from someone for several minutes in silence. Or sit next to someone for hours and slide past them close enough to touch, but never say a word.

Small talk diffuses discomfort somewhat.
