NORWALK — Norwalk Police arrested a Stamford woman Wednesday after they say she twice worked out at a gym while leaving her 4-month-old child unattended in a vehicle.

Hiroko Kurihara, 46, of Clovelly Road in Stamford, is charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and two counts of leaving an unattended child in a car. Kurihara was held on a $10,000 bond.

Police said they went to a parking garage at 770 Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk at about 12:20 p.m. to investigate a report of a crying infant left alone in a vehicle. Officers found the baby in a Toyota SUV with the windows rolled up, police said.

As officers and Norwalk Fire Department personnel were getting into the SUV, the mother returned to the vehicle, police said.

Kurihara, was arrested at the scene, and police said an investigation revealed that she left the child in the car while working out at the gym for about an hour in the morning and again for about 30 minutes at midday.

The baby was taken to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation and was later released to the father.

Police credited a concerned citizen who heard the baby’s cry and spent several minutes searching for the child. When she found the infant, she alerted police and waited by the vehicle until they arrived.
