Finding out that Run DMC helped them with lyrics on their first joints later made a lot of sense to me and probably why I fukk with those the most. Wouldn't be surprised if LL did too. To give credit to the Beasties their image is all their own, and even more importantly their vocal performances. Nobody really put THAT much energy in their delivery before, to a point it was cartoonish. But that's them. If you ever tried to rap along you'll realize they put EXTRA on their vocals.
In that period of Hip Hop there were a lot of loud, colorful characters. The graffiti, the beats, the clothes, everything was extra and loud. Their image was like a real life National Lampoon, frat boy act coming to life on record. That scumbag, miller beer drinking screaming white boy shyt is all their own and gave them their own lane.
When they changed to a rock band though and later a straight up "party rocking" MCs in the later half of their career I didn't like it so much. Ironically that was when they blew to a whole other level.
To me Paul's Boutique might be a high point in sampling period, but the manic energy of their first joints is a GOATed B-Boy sound and for me their best music. I didn't like them when they abandoned the crazy shyt. It'd be like if Eazy stopped rapping gangsta shyt
