Old heads on thecoli I'm curious.

What was the general consensus of the Beastie Boys during that time?

Did people take their music serious or were they looked at as a joke??

Skater kids fukked with their music heavy, you might wanna ask them. Most Hip-Hop heads I know didn't really care about them.

How old are y'all cats? Dudes banged with the Beasties, especially their first album, "Licensed to Ill". After THAT album I gotta admit that brehs really wasn't banging them like that, so there is some truth to your posts. But that first album was getting mad love on the NYC radio airwaves and clubs.

Ill Communication had some joints on it too. Only white rappers I semi fukked with. Mainly because of their beats

Public Enemy brought them on tour :yeshrug:

People like to use the term "altnervstuve rap" these days to describe "hipster rappers" but Beastie Boys IMO were the OGs of that. They came from the hardcore/scene

They were and are dope as fukk. They put it down and brought hip hop to levels it hadn't yet reached. As far as the music, they stayed true to themselves and never tried to be anything other than them. Yes they were weird and different, but they came from the NY punk music scene. Also if you listen to early NWA you can hear the BB influence on their delivery.

This is true before cube joined NWA they had a tape out that sounded identical to the beastie boys.
