Is it all its wrapped up to be? Is it as bad as people make it out to be?

I'm currently working for a relatively mid-size company and am the ONLY black guy in my department. There are only 3 black dudes (myself included) out of a company of 200 give or take. And these brothers aren't feminized or weak. They seem to be doing relatively good at their job from my perspective.
My personal experience has been a little different because I am an intern. Most of the people at my job are nice and considerate when they have to be. Which is all fine with me because I'm not there to make friend, its all about the money. However, its quite interesting seeing some of the reactions of people when I have to interact with them. When there are company gatherings I feel like the elephant in the room sometimes. People generally tend to avoid any social interaction with me. I've seen people purposely evade getting on the elevator with me and walk the steps just to avoid me. Which is always very comical. Other than that my job isn't all that bad when it comes to just doing the job. It's definitely not an environment I see myself in next 5-10 years. My goal like most brothers on here, is to start something of my own. I plan to put more effort into it after graduation. From my internship experience I can't really ascertain how being a regular employee would be. I can't imagine investing any more than 4-5 years of my time into something I do not own or control. The only thing that arouses that kind of dedication is entrepreneurship.

I'd like to know what your guy's experiences have been working at that corporate level. To me it isn't as bad as it is made out to be. I've dealt with the isolation and the constant reminder of being a token. However, none of these things have really bothered me since I'm an intern and its only temporary. Again, my experience may be totally different than real employee who has to interact with other employees concerning critical business issues.

I had a job at an engineering firm and it was me and 2 other black dudes in the whole place. They were engineers I was a delivery driver

Whenever I saw them they always gave me the black folk acknowledgment head nod or dap.I quit after a week cuz being surrounded by a sea of cacs was uncomfortable and I felt like a weirdo.I had nobody to talk to and that job was an hour commute plus it sucked

I interview people with my manager and sometimes when I like a candidate, and usually they're black. My manager-she would always find a flaw with the the candidate's experience and suggest a white candidate. It's hilarious because I just pick the black and asian ones anyway, there's only one white female on my team and I wouldn't have it any other way.

She should've never promoted me to supervisor. :russ:

I'm the only black Financial Analyst out of 175 associates in our Finance group at a fortune 500 company. Our sales dept has quite a few black folk tho. They hired me right out of college. Was I an affirmative action hire?

...don't really know nor care bc I'm getting some valuable experience. Many companies are genuinely looking to diversify tho and brehs and brehettes are getting $$$.
