It's great because you always have a point of reference. More times than not whatever people are doing backflips over currently either you've heard it before and in a lot of cases done better. People who are younger come to you to gauge what you know versus what they know about past eras.

It's bad because your expectations are super high since...you've heard it all. So if you're starting your bar like "stacking money like..." however you end it better be some real slick shyt otherwise what's the point?

I think this is the reason it's easy to be dismissive of a lot guys at the moment because you have an understanding of who the rapper of now may be based on and it just doesn't measure up. Then again you guys are real smart and probably think different

Yep, I said something similar in that Migos freestyle thread.

It was complete trash to us dudes whose been listening to hip-hop 20+ years.

We have a standard and they didn't come close.

If you thought it was dope, more than likely your young.

I don't agree with OP at all. Quite the opposite. Even the rappers that I'm not into, often I can see them building on what's come before. Lyrically, there's only so much that can be done that wasn't already done. But the way rappers flow on and with the beat, the subject matter, seeing the trends change and come back, etc. I dunno, this stuff still excites me. Almost as much as hearing Illmatic or All Eyez On Me for the first time.

You really gotta think. Are you nostalgic about the soundtrack to a certain part of your life or are you a fan of the artform? A lot of people are the former, but not the latter. If you're into the artform, you'll always find something out there that you can feel or appreciate.
