Option for small but not Maltese stupid small - miniature Schnauzer. They don’t shed, super affectionate, very smart (I think top 10-15 smartest dog breeds), kinda funny with how stubborn and cunning they can be - definitely a dog that knows it’s cute and can punk you, they need moderate amounts of exercise but can also keep up for longer sessions, they love to play so are great with kids if you have kids or want kids. I miss my parent’s mini schnauzer, she was the sweetest dog
