the foundation was built with cotton. and the free labor was the entire point. without that foundation there isn't the railroads, coal and buildings. modernization happens in steps and comes out of need. besides, where were Black people during Industrialization? did we just disappear after slavery and then suddenly reappear during the civil rights era?
