I'm starting an original series I'm calling, "Best Cities For Black People In...", beginning with my state of current residence and profiling all seven states I've lived in (Arkansas, California, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia), finishing with my state of birth...

There is no real methodology other than what I find important in my own black experience. I'll start by listing the black population percentage of the 20 largest cities in each state, and chronicle what I know about the black experience in said cities and state and what makes one place better or worse for us as a people...

I'm only one black man though, and I understand my desires and tastes differ from others, so I fully encourage every other person on this site to engage in this series with what you know about these states, cities, or any inquiries you have!

So full disclosure, I'm not a fan of Georgia and it's the state I've lived in that I like the least. My mother lives in Gainesville, I have a brother who bounces between Gainesville and Athens, I have a brother in prison and a sister in Columbus. I would never, ever step foot in GA again if it weren't for these people living there, I dislike it that much...

That said, it can't be denied the advantages it has for black people, ESPECIALLY if of strong relevance to you are Black people running cities and counties at all levels of government. Georgia may have that more than any other state...

I lived in Gainesville, I was actually the first one out there, I brought two of my brothers out to me and my mom came after I left. Gainesville isn't a great place for black folk, it's in racist ass Hall County, most black people are poor there, and it's nearly 40% Latino. It provides easy access to Atlanta and surroundings though, maybe the best quality it has---->Gainesville is around 15 minutes from the Mall of Georgia and Gwinnett...

Besides Atlanta and it's Gwinnett burbs, only other places I've been to in GA are Macon and Savannah once apiece...

Black mobility is huge in GA and black success in pretty much any career field is represented, at least in Greater Atlanta, not sure how prevalent it is elsewhere. Doctors, lawyers, entertainers, mayor's, school boards, city councils, universities, city services, etc etc etc. You'll find so many black people in leadership positions in Georgia; this obviously isn't unique to Georgia because a few other places do this well too, but most places don't have this widespread representation of Black Success...

Atlanta and environs are easily the greatest place for blacks in Georgia, my question for GA posters, when you leave Greater Atlanta, what are the best places for us in GA?

I am not one of these people who think GA is THE greatest place for black people in America. I do think it is one of the Black Meccas, Atlanta specifically, but would not put it above DC and think a handful of other places offer a parallel experience. But without a doubt, it's one of the best places in the US for us, easily...

I'm surprised Conyers isn't on the list. It's bigger than Stonecrest and has a sizeable black population now. I have family there and they love it.

Where do you live? Are you a native or transplant?

Currently living in Savannah.

It feels oppressive AF. I’m out as soon as possible. :francis:

Aren't you originally from 757, VA? Tap into the VA thread too!

Can you also go in depth about Savannah? How long have you been there and what specifically do you dislike about it?

Yes. I was born and spent my childhood in VA. I moved to Savannah when I was 13.

At this point (since I’m 32), I’ve been here longer than anywhere else. This would be considered “home”. Anyway…it’s really like witnessing two different worlds. The beautiful tourist/historic city that they sell to out of town people and then TRUE Savannah.

As a resident it’s hard to get anywhere. It’s a mid sized city with small town problems. Everyone knows everyone or knows someone that’s close to to them. There’s a lot of crime and most of the murders/attempted murders stem from jealously or not wanting to see the next person get ahead of them. There’s a lot of simple minded people here unfortunately.

I know Savannah has been growing fast in the last decade, I take it infrastructure hasn't kept up with the growth?

In your opinion what are good places outside of Savannah for black people in Georgia?

I'll say this, Savannah is the rare city I've seen that both black and white people praise. This may be different amongst residents like yourself of course, but when I was in GA both us and whites praised Savannah without fail...

I had to go to Savannah recently. That was my only time there, but that shyt for old people. If you trying to retire and care about historic shyt then yeah. But that’s old people shyt. It don’t seem like it’s no type of money out there. A nikka I know from Savannah told me it was no designer stores out there and that was an open opportunity. Then I went out there and was like, who the fukk would put some designer stores out this bytch lol. These nikkas not on that type of time. Savannah seem like one of them cities where it ain’t shyt to do and limited career options so nikkas end up doing dumb shyt for fun and it be a lot of crime. A not so small city with a small town feel. Sort of like Jacksonville Fl. I actually know several people from Savannah…they all live in Atlanta

I’m currently in South Fulton. The way they have this city mapped is so weird, lol. I’m currently on the side closest to Union City, but you’ve got some of the city all the way near cascade. Remember going to the Home Depot over on cascade and seeing a SF cop car over there.

Anyways, I’m a fan of Georgia. Have been living here for 6 years now, started my family down here. Moved here from NC after college. I go through most of my days seeing nothing but black folks. I shop with black businesses. On Saturdays, I’m typically in College Park on Main Street eating at the black owned restaurants. Still a lot of work to be done around here, but it seems to be getting better.

I’m not sure of all the exact names, but areas close to and surrounding Atlanta seem to have been good to a lot of black people that I’ve known that chose to move there. Those are really the only places that I know for sure.

Savannah is a hard place to live especially when you don’t have generations of family here (like my situation) to help you. However, I can say that it is probably one of the most beautiful cities that I’ve been to let alone lived in. The parks, the trees, the historic district, and some parts of Tybee are breathtaking. That’s about it though. :russ:

Brooklyn keeps on taking it.
Atlanta obviously good place.

I’ve traveled throughout Georgia before and honestly speaking it’s a hick state outside the A metro.

Savanah I haven’t heard anyone tell me something good about that place yet except the unique culture. Trying to visit cause they have brownstones down there.

Augusta, GA was recommended by a NY breh in the nyc group on Facebook. Turns about Augusta is not much of anything either
