-Pay off all debt including car and student loans. Read Debt-Proof Living by Mary Hunt or listen to Dave Ramsey.
-Only fund 401k to get the match. Too many people have to pay taxes and penalties when they need the money for an emergency.
-Keep short term money in a money market mutual fund. Make it a fixed amount based on your potential needs, say $5000-$10,000.
-Invest in low-turnover stock mutual funds with a low cost mutual fund company. Read books from the library on investing and retirement.

Im pretty sure im only contributing 4% to my 401k all of which is matched.
I'm more than likely gonna open a money market account with my tax return. btwn 4k-6k. Question, this money is available whenever I need it right?

I have one credit card that i need to pay off. I continue to work on that, my loans, and my car.

Ima check that book out too.

What are some of the best low cost mutual fund companies in your opinion?

The money in a money market account is available whenever you need it, although they do limit the number of withdrawals that you can make per month, usually 3 to 6. It's not attached to your checking account so you won't be as tempted to take money out.

The best low cost mutual fund companies are Vanguard, Fidelity, and T. Rowe Price. Vanguard is low cost across the board. With Fidelity and T. Rowe Price you have to look at each fund individually.
