so i have an old wd 1tb hard drive that looks like it's about it go. i boot off a ssd and it still shows up in the bios and in disk management/windows explorer, so i guess it's not totally bricked but i haven't been able to access it through windows.

there is some stuff that i haven't backed-up yet that i'd like to move onto a new drive if i can and i'm certain you guys are more tech savvy than me, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Putting your drive in the freezer for a couple of hours could help. I did this for one my externals it didn't show up windows, but after a couple of hours in the freezer it finally showed up. :yeshrug:

Why does OP need this for?

Unless I misunderstood the OP question, I was under the impression that the "total system" is giving him problems.

With the adapter he could remove the hard drive from the laptop/desktop/etc. Plug the adapter into the rear and access it like a USB stick. Afterwards he can simply transfer the files. :yeshrug:
Now if the issue is the integrity of the Hdd itself well...:francis:

i'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "total system" but basically i just want to pull some stuff from that dying hdd and put them on a new one. it's just that i can't get into it through windows, otherwise i wouldn't have a problem grabbing the files.

Hdd, motherboard, cpu, video card, monitor, wiring, inputs, etc.

I.E. I was under the impression you had a bad setup and wanted to pull data off the Hdd. The adapter lets you deal with the Hdd on it's own, taking the rest of the "eco system" out of the equation. Same way you can move a USB drive from computer to computer.

Put another way, if you have some kind of currupted OS files making it impossible to properly load the OS(operating system) the adapter goes around those files and allows you to use the attached Hdd like an external hard drive.

It's the same process as plugging in your cell phone to move pictures & music to and from your phone onto the PC.
