90's. 00's had some classics, but there's also something about the production style of a lot of 00's r&b that makes it sound more dated, like that rodney jerkins, bryan michael cox/johnta austin sound just feels to specific too that period. 90's r&b generally has a sound that crosses over better. not to mention how many classics came out from so many different types of artists, and we still had groups. by the 00's, you had bad 112 releases, a few dope jagged edge projects, a :flabbynsick: tlc album and one good album from destiny child.

That a tough one but I'll put Donell jones album where I wanna be against any of those 90 albums.

That album actually came out in 99

Was vibing to that classic when i made this thread. Perfect from beginning to end. Soundtrack of my childhood

90's hands down. The 90's was pretty much R&B at it's peak. It was the last era where nikkaz had to sing to be considered an R&B act.

yall saying 70's >>>, i'd argue the 90's go head to head with the 70's, and this is coming from someone who absolutely loves 60's-70's soul music. i think both periods were GOAT for r&b, they did very different things with the music, but i couldn't put one over the other.

The cut off point is '05 IMO.

And that's only because the early 2000's still had a lot of 90's residue on it.

We hadn't fully transitioned into the new decade.Takes about 4-5 years for that to happen.

So to me, the 90's officially ended in '05....'06 is when the "2000's" fully took over.

That 6th year is usually when the new decade takes over on it's own.

Difference between '96 & '06....'96, shyt spiked upward.Hit a peak.

'06, shyt spiked downward and went into a tailspin. To the point where we have

a dude like Drake trying to drift in and out of that R&B lane. For that reason(and many more)

Voted for 2000s.

  • Usher in his pomp
  • Mamas Gun, Voodoo and the whole neo-soul movement
  • 90s legends all released their best music during the decade (Kellz, JE, Raphael Saadiq, etc.)
  • Underground RnB was poppin with cats like Foreign Exchange, Eric Roberson & Miguel
  • Amerie, Alicia, Ashanti, Angie, Amy, Ambrosius, Aaliyah. Great time for female vocalists

lol, it don't take no 5-6 years for the new decade to start. i could see maybe giving 00/01 even 02 a crossover pass, but 03+ was definitely a different look in rap and r&b compared to things from 98/99

There's no correct answer to none of this shyt. It's all based on individual perspective. To me, the 90's sound was present up until '05.

Changed frequencies in '06
