I never quite grasped the concept of shorting. I know that's what happened in the financial crisis, is it literally betting against yourself and making sure you have the coverage to pay yourself back when it happens?

Not betting against yourself, but knowing that what goes up must come down. When some investment gains a huge amount it's going to come back down over time. It's actually harder to short investments because so many people are waiting to do it, so your time to get in is limited before the opportunity runs out. But when you do get in there's no time limit on how long you can wait. Months, Years even to get your money back and make money.
