I’ve heard this song thousands of times growing up - and even more as an adult - and I’m in the gym right now listening to it and I’m still in awe

You don’t run into production and sonic quality like this very often, if at all. There’s an eerie, chilling, introspective undertone to the whole song that just cuts through you - the keys, the snare - everything about it is amazing and sounds so clean.

The terms classic and timeless are used mindlessly and cheaply these days - but this song - in fact the whole album - but this song specifically embodies those words to me. You could travel 200 years from now - future or past - and play it and Beethoven or whoever would rip apart all their compositions

Not for nothing, but if I had ever created anything of this magnitude and quality I could die happy knowing I marked my existence in this world. This is Dre’s magnum opus to me (I know Scott Storch played his part)

:hubie:

I don’t know man, I legit just stopped in the middle of my workout and felt like I had to say something about how amazing this song is.

the lyrical content on the album gets iffier the older i get

but the beats feel MONUMENTAL, they really put on a clinic with the record even performance wise some career high vocals from some hall of famers

dedicated to those with big eegooos...

I think we're very fortunate that an instrumental version was released. Something that hasn't happened enough in hip hop. Especially due to lyrical content. A LOT of hip hop is good until you get past the age of 15 then you go :francis:

I've posted in threads about this before, I'll have to search for it. This is definitely the best beat on the album and I play this anytime I'm testing new speakers of any kind. In the other thread someone posted a video of Dre playing a early version of this just after they made it and you can tell he's geeked about it.

Big Egos is easily the best song on that album. This home video leaked a while back showing Dre (unreleased version of his verse) and Hittman at a house party right after they recorded it. Scott Storch said that it was the first song he ever did with Dre, so it's clear that a majority of the 2001 sound came from that banger. You can tell from the vid that Dre was energized because he stumbled upon some unheard of futuristic shyt his drums paired with Storch's keys created. That was the match made in heaven that made 2001 the classic it is.

From that thread I referenced.

Which one would you say is better ? (on Aftermath)
That was an exaggeration lol (though MMLP definitely gives it a run for its money). But The Chronic is far superior in terms of production, so 2001 isnt even Dres best; let alone the best produced hip hop album ever.
