Like theyre legitimate hip hop fans, they know their Wu, their Tribe etc, but they dont quite know what separates great hip hop from :ld: hip hop.

Which is why J Cole is popular.

On the other hand its one of the reasons that rappers like Kendrick, Schoolboy, Chance the Rapper etc are able to build solid fanbases... so I guess its kind of a good thing :manny:

Nah thats not exactly what Im trying to get at.

Im not even saying saying this type of fan is bad for hip hop. Alot of my friends are like this.

Just making an observation... with Cole about to go Gold I just think its fair to say that the college scene runs hip hop.

I shouldnt have said "white"... Cause I know how much the coli likes talking about race.

I was just trying to pinpoint a demographic

I mean theyre just casual listeners, thats what it comes down to.

Again not a bad thing, alot of people just arent that passionate about music.

But it means someone like J Cole can do huge numbers with a mediocre album

I semi agree with you, though.. I just hate when people refer to more lyrical rap as the "the real" shyt.

I'v noticed more and more people are getting on to the likes of stuff like Mac Miller, and Logic.. it's not what I'm into.. but I can see the appeal to upper middle class whites or just the upper or middle class in genral. Artists like J-Cole, hold that middle ground enough for them to kinda stay in that "bubble", I think..

I remember I was hanging out with a friend of mine and she put Wu Tang on, and her guy friend we were with in the car said exactly "This makes me feel like I'm about to go shoot up store", and then went on to say he doesn't like it. He recognized it as being legit hip hop and I was surprised he had more knowledge than I thought regarding rap.. he just didn't understand it because that's not where he came from, he couldn't relate it so it didn't appeal to him. But he was a huge Mac Miller stan..like its "challenging" enough but doesnt make him feel uncomfortable.. its "safe" enough where white people can listen to it without getting a bad taste in their mouth. Or that's just at least how I view it.

Ya thats what Im saying. Its about that middleground between serious hip hop heads, and the kind of fans who only fukk with trap. Thats where the money is at..

And when an artist who strikes that balance comes in and talks about saving hip hop and all that shyt. :ohlawd: sooo much money coming in

So broke college kids that go out and buy 6 Cole albums on release day are just "casual" listeners right?

Sorry I didnt know this was a J. Cole hate thread. I'm out.

Wow another "I don't like a rapper so that means only white people are buying it" cliche

I've seen J. Cole fans go crazy when J. Cole brings out guys like Meek Mill, Drake, Jeezy, 2 Chainz.

If you read the thread further, you'd understand that wasn't his point. He isn't hating on J-Cole, in fact I think he actually recognizes that J-Cole is smart for aiming at a certain demographic that makes up a lot of the people buying music.. middle class white kids who casually listen to music.

I consider myself a music head, but I hardly EVER buy music now, because there's constantly so much of it being released I'd need an extra part time job just to keep up.

but casual music listeners don't keep up with music like that, so they aren't exactly aware of how much music is constantly being released therefor they don't know about all the stuff to go out and buy it. To them dishing out the money for an album isnt a big deal because they're probably keepin up with the same 5 hip hop artists with number 1 in sales.
