And in the heyday of Bad Boy Records, a partnership between Davis and Sean "Puffy" Combs, Davis spent a lot of time at hip-hop parties. "

There any only 5 major record companies. All of these rappers "labels" have always had to be under one of those parent companies. Those companies collect a percentage of the earnings and ultimately have the final say. None of these rappers have ever "owned" any of this shyt. The white man still owns and runs everything.

This is when Puff was at Uptown producing for Mary/Jodeci and he was trying to get Andre Harell to sign his label Badboy under uptown.

Puff and Andrew had some type of deal that's why Biggie wrapped on Mary's real love remix, and then they did party and bullshyt on the who's the man soundtrack and the dolly my baby supercat remix.

When Puff got fired from Andre, he also left with his label Badboy and then struck a production deal with Arista.

You're right when Uptown granted Puff the chance to start it was just a imprint not a real record company. So it was really just a logo deal and he'd get his 30% A&R cut. When Clive and Puff deal ended he gave him the chance to buy back his masters.
