In an interview Tuesday, former Giants coach Jim Fassel hinted that there could be a spring developmental league coming from the NFL next year.

That would be the first such league under NFL control since NFL Europa was put out to pasture in 2007 and it would be something that longtime executive and incoming Hall of Famer Bill Polian thinks fills a major void in the sport.

“The quality of our game has suffered because there is not a developmental league,” Polian said on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “Particularly for young quarterbacks; particularly for young offensive linemen; particularly for young defensive linemen, especially 3-4 defensive linemen. There’s a crying need for it.”

Polian went on to say that the rise of spread offenses in college has made the issue even more acute because many quarterbacks aren’t prepared to serve as starters or backups at the professional level. He pointed out the number of quarterbacks produced by the league’s previous European endeavors as a way that a developmental league bolsters the regular NFL.

The football side of things seems pretty obvious, but there are financial issues involved with starting even a minor league. Polian said he thinks there are six locales that could host and support teams right now and that they could be profitable quickly with the NFL chipping in for things like insurance, uniforms and equipment.

There was no echo of Fassel’s hint about a coming league, but the bare bones about why it’s needed and how it could work that Polian make it seem like something well worth exploring.

Complete horseshyt. The quality of talent coming into the league is better than ever. It's the dumb ass rules that have fukked it up.
Greedy ass owners ain't paying for a developmental league.

Yep, league is stacked to fukk with talent. I still wouldn't mind a developmental league though, just because I need more NFL.

There's a lack of NFL ready talent, particularly with respects to QBs, that would definitely change if a developmental league is implemented. The NCAA focuses on winning games, not developing players. And if winning means running all day and only letting the QB throw on play action, then that's what winning means. That's why the NFL has QBs enter the league like Geno Smith who never made a NFL type read. Or strong safeties like Calvin Pryor who played in the box all day in college and can't play NFL coverage. A true developmental league would definitely ameliorate the situation and help players, teams and fans of the game.

Dumb ass polian that is what the NFLs whore ass NCAA football is for. Second of all you had a developmental league in the CFL. But the NFL helped kill it by making laws back in the day that the CFL couldn't broadcast in certain places in the US. Not only that when the CFL went bankrupt the NFL loaned them money and stated that they could not sign NFL players that were serving suspensions or who have been kicked out the league without the NFLs approval.

WRONG. Rookie QBS now play like rookie QBs of the past. This notion that the qb is supposed to come in and just blow the roof off is asinine. They aren't gonna be any better off playing barely league eligible talent . Maybe if GMs gave the young QB a chance instead of drafting one every other year they'd be in better positions. Besides show me how they aren't developing.
His statement is dumb and there are too many roster spots on nfl teams to even bother having a d league.
