It's a real shame. His first album basically was the blueprint for a lot of our favorite rappers and producers for that matter. Marley Marl as well. If you ask me, that shyt should be way above Illmatic in terms of changing the landscape of rap. How many rappers sampled him alone from that one album? He wasnt the best rapper but he was an emcee.

Crazy when you think about how the government pretty much went after him in its continuing war on hip hop with the sampling laws issue. They couldn't get nwa or 2livecrew but they got the biz. shyt literally changed rap overnight.
:comeon: brehs always gotta go too far
nobody looked at him as a dope MC tho. he was more of a commedian/entertainer. stacked with talent but he stood out. he was popular because he was funny. he was the anti-Rakim
Then if his lane was comedic (non-self-written) content and he wasn't respected as a dope MC then that explains why he isn't held in the same regard as the heavyweights of the late 80s.

3rd verse starts off with him saying "well let me take a trip down Memory Lane" :ahh: sampled on off course Illmatic
