A babysitter charged with murdering a 16-month-old boy whose family lived in the same Staten Island building subjected him to hours of physical and sexual abuse while he was left in her care over the weekend, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

On Sunday night, when she took him to his uncle who lives upstairs, the boy was unconscious and unresponsive, and pronounced dead later that night. He had multiple skull fractures, internal bleeding, cuts and bruises to his face and across his body, as well as internal injuries caused by the sexual assault, according to prosecutors.

“He could not walk,” Ann Thompson, an assistant district attorney, said at the hearing. “He could not talk. He could not scream. He could not ask for help.”

Ms. Fields, who was arrested on Tuesday, pleaded not guilty through her lawyer to charges including second-degree murder, seven counts of assault and one count of aggravated sexual abuse. She was ordered held in jail without bail. Her lawyer, Maria Guastella, declined to comment after the hearing.

Michael E. McMahon, the Staten Island district attorney, said in a statement that his office would “aggressively prosecute this atrocious crime.”

“For 48 hours, this depraved woman systematically tortured a 16-month-old baby,” Mr. McMahon said. “No creature on this earth, let alone an innocent child, deserves to undergo such horrific torment.”

Ms. Fields displayed no emotion during the hearing. The boy’s mother, Marta Delgado, was at times pulled into the embrace of family and friends, while some yelled threats and profanities at Ms. Fields.

“You’ve got some nerve!” one person called out.

“We loved that little boy, you understand?” said another.

Relatives said that Anthony’s parents, who never married, separated in December, and that in recent months Ms. Delgado had at times left Anthony with Ms. Fields, who lives in the second-floor apartment of the building on Steuben Street in the Park Hill section of Staten Island where Anthony and several of his maternal relatives lived.

Anthony was with Ms. Fields from Friday to Sunday, and during that time, she used heroin and smoked marijuana, according to a criminal complaint. The authorities said Ms. Fields had at least one child of her own, and it was that child’s crayon she used to assault Anthony.

Ms. Fields had multiple previous arrests, mostly for misdemeanor crimes, like petit larceny, of which she was convicted in November, law enforcement officials said.

Anthony’s grandmother called 911 on Sunday night after Ms. Fields dropped off the boy, the authorities said. Emergency workers arrived just after 10 p.m. and tried to resuscitate him. An hour later, he was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital North. The medical examiner’s office found that he had died of blunt force injuries to his head and torso.

Roger Simpson, the child’s paternal grandfather, said Anthony had some health issues, including asthma, but he was a quiet and happy boy.

“He was always very playful and responsive,” Mr. Simpson said in an interview. “The only thing with him was that you had to check him physically almost every 15 minutes because he was the type of child, if in pain, would not complain.”

Linda Cromwell, Anthony’s great-aunt, spent hours waiting outside the courtroom for the hearing to begin. She said the boy’s family was distraught. “We’re shocked; we’re devastated,” she said quietly, shaking her head. “It’s unbelievable — an innocent little boy.”

“I’m trying not to be angry,” Ms. Cromwell added later. “The only way I’m getting through it is through faith.”

Well it's a good thing we know she is black because otherwise I wouldn't know how to make a moral judgment about this story otherwise. Thanks op for not neglecting that piece of information.
