you're in denial.![]()
it wasn't the teacher's place to give that "lesson". and, based on what i get from the article, the way she delivered the message to the boy wasn't the most effective means. for one, it rates him as second class automatically which could stigmatize the boy in the future. in my humble opinion, by her even mentioning race and saying he needed to work harder because of it puts him in a position where he feels like he needs to seek approval by any means based on his race, which he shouldn't have to. he shouldn't be seeking anyone's approval. if he does his assignments correctly and to the best of his ability, that's what's needed. he doesn't need to have the idea that he's seeking approval hanging over his head. nor does he need to have it come from someone he'd be seeking approval from either, seeing how she's a white teacher.
it just shifts his mentality in a way that wasn't necessary, making him believe he has to work hard solely BECAUSE he's black, which isn't true. he'd be working harder to gain the approval of those who aren't. either way, that wasn't something she needed to tell him. it wasn't her place and was inappropriate. even if you feel like it's true or not. and that doesn't mean that i don't think what she said is true either...
I get what you are saying, but I also get the teacher too, and I kinda understand why his mom is mad, but this is something she should teach him too.no one's in denial. she had no business doing that, regardless if it's true or not. this is equal to slave masters telling their slaves "because you're black, you're not good enough, so you have to work harder" or "you need to accept christ" or anything that made it appear that their race was the problem or their "crutch". especially given the fact that race is a social construct...
trust me, i understand the teacher's point. but she had no reason to comment on race and what he needed to do because of his race. it's clear she didn't even consider would be implied when she told him that, because if she did, then she wouldn't have even mentioned anything about race. she's a white teacher who is in a position where she gives the approval and he's a black student in a position where he's seeking approval, and then you tell him you have to work twice as hard to impress someone like me because you're black and i'm white? that was the wrong thing to say given her position. what i find weird is that no one even considered that avenue when they read the article. they were just bent on the fact that "yeah, it's true". yeah, it can be true, but a white person telling you that at a certain age is bad, it's condemning. especially someone you're already trying to perform for...I get what you are saying, but I also get the teacher too, and I kinda understand why his mom is mad, but this is something she should teach him too.
