I generally avoid business that try to dictate my behavior or virtu signal too hard. wouldn't frequent.

I understand why a standup comedian has a no phone policy, they don't want their set recorded and spoiled. But a chef? You worked in hells kitchen breh, you can handle distracted customers.

Even movie theaters don't go as far as collecting peoples phones. and that can directly affect the experience.

I somewhat agree. But for restaurants in particular, if the food is good, I’ll comply with whatever the rules or “gimmick” is

I went to a spot in Vegas and it was totally dark, they had to guide you to your seat, tell you where you where your utensils, glasses etc were. You didn’t even know what you were eating. 4-5 courses and you’re guessing. At the end they tell you, you just ate a vegan meal. Food was below average and overpriced

If it were good, it would’ve been worth it

I hear you. I don't mind the attempt. Let's see what happens. I would like to check it out and see if it really changes the atmosphere. If it does, he might be on to something. And I don't think comedians only do it to protect their material. I think a byproduct of them doing it is that the audience is more engaged. It helps the energy in the room......well, I'm assuming it does. I mean, it has to.

If a movie theater doesn't even take it this far with phones. a restaurant doesn't need to. a disclaimer would have been enough

Yeah but I bet some would argue they should. I'm fine with it as long as you know the deal before you go. That man is telling you why he wants it that way at his establishment. I don't think it's the wildest of ideas. If you don't like it, just don't go. But at least give it chance to cook.
