A Florida couple has been kidnapped in Haiti and remains captive under ransom demands, family members say, who are asking for help and pressuring US officials to find them.

Abigail and Jean-dikkens Toussaint, both 33, were kidnapped on March 18 around Port-au-Prince, the nation’s capital, according to a statement from their families provided to CNN.

ā€œPlease share this and get the word out as much as you can,ā€ the statement says, hoping the two return safe ā€œto their child and family.ā€

A US State Department spokesperson told CNN they are ā€œaware of reports of two U.S. citizens missing in Haiti.ā€

ā€œWhen a U.S. citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts, and we share information with families however we can,ā€ the spokesperson said. ā€œWe have nothing further to share at this time.ā€

The couple went to Haiti to visit family and to attend a festival but were kidnapped on their bus ride from Port-au-Prince, according to a woman named Christie, claiming to be the victims’ niece.

ā€œThey stopped the bus at a stop and then asked for Americans to get off the bus and their escorts off the bus, and then they took them,ā€ she told CNN affiliate WPLG.

The kidnappers asked for $6,000 for the couple’s release, but after their family paid, they asked for more money, WPLG reports.

ā€œOnce we sent that money, they tried to up the price to $200,000 per person and we don’t have that type of money,ā€ Christie told WPLG.

CNN has reached out to authorities in Haiti for more information but has not received a response.

I’m trusting @Henri Christophe input on this :jbhmm:

"american couple held ransom" gets the clicks and views.

someone most likely set them up.

the turbulence is mainly concentrated in the capital city and it sounded like they were moving foolishly... travelling on public transportation like a goofy trying to "be among the people"

Notice how western media only talks about "port au prince" ... you never hear about Cap-Haitian, Jacmel, Les Cayes, Gonaives, Artibonite, etc

Black couple held hostage in Haiti for nearly a week

Damn, I can't post the link
I dont understand why you need the qualifier ā€œblackā€. It makes no sense in the context of a black nation. Everybody is black. It adds as much information as me saying, ā€œ a person with two arms and one nose is being held hostageā€.

I could understand if you were making distinction between the haitians on the island and FBA/ADOS, but this was a Haitian couple (based on their names) being held up by fellow Haitians. So once again, the qualifier ā€œblackā€ doesnt mean anything.
