Absolutely necessary life skill.
Anything beyond that is determined by the consistency of one's actions. Because inconsistency, especially not keeping your word, is what prevents the necessary second part of forgiveness: letting go/forgetting. Nobody's going to deal with you if you can't even keep your word with yourself...much less anybody else.
