Full video: Man Fatally Shoots Black Motorcyclist During Argument At North Carolina Stoplight!
A male motorcyclist was shot and killed Monday around 12:30 p.m. in Fayetteville. Police said Stephen Addison, 32, was shot in the chest in a road rage confrontation and died of his injuries.
Police and Cumberland County sheriff's deputies tracked Roger Dale Nobles, 51, to his home on Auburn Street in the county and arrested him on a first-degree murder charge.
Neighbors said when the Nobles father and son pulled into the driveway, they were immediately surrounded by law enforcement officers.
"They put them in handcuffs, and then it went from there," one neighbor said. "They started searching the truck."
According to the warrant for his arrest, Nobles was driving his 1992 Chevrolet pickup when he and his son, Roger Dale Nobles Jr., got into some kind of conflict with Addison at the intersection of Skibo and Cliffdale roads. Nobles Jr. got out of the truck to confront Addison, and Nobles Sr. fired a gun from the driver's seat, police said.
Video sent to WRAL News on Tuesday of the confrontation showed Nobles Jr. standing outside of the passenger side of a truck. As Nobles Jr. gets closer to the motorcyclist, a shot is fired — which police said was from the truck.
Nobles Sr. admitted to the shooting after his arrest, but the warrants do not include any reason he might have offered to police.
After the shooting, video showed Nobles Jr. starts to walk away from Addison after he falls to the ground.
A neighbor, Shahara Chance, told WRAL News that she's had problems with Nobles for years, and that he has used a racial slur against her.
"He done drove in my yard and took pictures of me on my porch. He's shot his gun in the air telling me to turn my music down. I done been through hell with this man," Chance said.
WRAL News asked District Attorney Bill West if Noble, who is white, might be charged with a hate crime in the death of Addison, who is Black. He said he'll weigh the evidence and do more interviews before making that decision.
"If the evidence warrants that type of charge, it's certainly something we would look at and pursue," West said.
Nobles is being held at the Cumberland County jail without bond.
Stephen Addison, father of 3, remembered as 'loving soul'
Friends said Addison was a father to three children and had a "great, loving soul."
"[He was] a loving, caring guy for anybody. He stayed out the way [and] was never in anybody's business," said Justin Cockrell, a friend of Addison's.
Cockrell described Addison as well-known and loved in the Fayetteville community.
"There won't be one bad word spoken about Stephen," he added.
Cockrell said that he felt that he'd lost his friend "for nothing."
"It's just senseless. It's 2022, and we're still talking about road rage, I mean, come on. I lost my brother, for what? He has three kids ... he's a veteran and served in the military," he added.
