Black-Owned Restaurant Month comes to NYC in September

As this year's summer NYC Restaurant Week comes to a close, a new prix-fixe menu event is hitting the city—this one, with a cause.

Genese Jamilah, Ebony staffer and founder of the blog I Don't Do Clubs, had trouble locating black-owned eateries, stores and medical services when she moved to New York City. Wanting to support local businesses owned by African-American proprietors specifically, she took matters into her own hands, creating comprehensive lists of black-owned restaurants in New York, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta.

After those lists quickly went viral, Jamilah decided to take it one step further. Black-Owned Restaurant Month starts Wednesday, September 9th with $35 three-course prix-fixe menus on Mondays through Wednesdays at popular Harlem and Brooklyn haunts like Lolo's Seafood Shack, Rustik Tavern andSeasoned Vegan. The month officially ends on September 30th, by which time Jamilah hopes to have generated awareness about the city's African-American dining establishments. See participating venues and menus.
