#BlackLivesMatter and so should the high unemployment rate

The “wallpaper effect” is to blame for the lack of attention to African American unemployment, said Valerie Rawlston Wilson, director of the race, ethnicity and economy program at the Economic Policy Institute.

“It is true that black unemployment has always been about twice as high as white unemployment – give or take a few tenths of a decimal. The lowest the ratio has ever been in any month is 1.7 and the highest is 2.8. The two rates have never even been close to being the same,” she said.

“It’s been that way for so long that people have come to expect it and even make excuses for it like blaming it on education or skills,” she said, pointing out that Latinos, who have lower education attainment rates than black people, also have a lower unemployment rate. “I think that until we own up to the fact that racism and racial bias – explicit or implicit, directly or indirectly – are a major part of this ongoing disparity and do something to directly address these issues that little or nothing will change.”

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on this. Do you think this will ever change? Why or why not.

As for my opinion I would say that the unemployment rate of African-Americans is easily one of the top issues that African Americans face. There have been links to crime and high rates of unemployment (Higher Crime Rate Linked To Low Wages And Unemployment, Study Finds), crime and mental health, (http://www.apa.org/pi/ses/resources/indicator/2012/04/unemployment.aspx), unemployment and physical health (http://isr.umich.edu/src/seh/mprc/PDFs/Effects of Unemployment on Health in a Community Survey.pdf), and unemployment and mortality (http://www.lancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(96)03291-6/abstract).

While unemployment certainly isn't the only problem African-Americans face, it's hard to imagine any solution to the ills that we currently face without it being dealt with. In terms of potential solutions, the first thing that needs to be done is to realize that not all black unemployment is equal. While it is certainly unfortunate that a transient high-skilled or medium-skilled African-American worker has lost their job. What I'm focused on more so is the underclass of African-Americans. Neighborhoods like Sandtown where Freddie Gray was born.

And to put this in perspective, this is from 1967. Only like 2 minutes needs to be watched.

Two cities, 48 years apart but similar outcomes. These are African-Americans who have not in any way, shape or form seen any significant improvement in their condition over the last 47 years and probably even longer. I don't really have any specific solutions to offer other than to say that somehow someway these people need to be given a stake in our economy because if not then there WILL continue to be riots. As James Baldwin says, "The most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose."

Yeah, the way they calculate the unemployment is rate is silly. Labor participation is at an all-time low so the real unemployment rate is around 12.6. So the unemployment rate for African-Americans is probably no where close to the unemployment rate of 10% listed in the article. So the real unemployment rate in those areas that I'm talking about above are probably even worse. This just seems to me like the one of the greatest challenges that our country faces.

My pops grew up in that area. I'm so glad he didn't raise me out there, though I do go back a few times a year. Nothing those people can do but MOVE.

You need more than more jobs and higher levels of employment. You need more jobs that pay a living wage

This has to do with lack of black business a la Claude Anderson

And any black person supporting the Democratic Party efforts for amnesty and the flooding of the labor market through massive immigration needs to stop and think about the economic consequences to African Americans of what they are supporting

Unfortunetly black people are content with having good jobs and stay in the same position for years while their white counterparts pass them.

Even a lot of the members here are cool with their IT postion and entry level luxury car thinking they made it.

Until nikkas start being bosses and put on their own this wont change.

You can't be a boss unless they promote you to a boss. they dont like to do that for bros/sistas. which stops any type of pipeline for future bros/sistas.

so if you go the twism route and "lets create more black businesses." thats sounds great in theory but in reality. you need capital to build and sustain most businesses. you need enough capital and not just a sb loan. thats usually not enough. you need some of your own $$$ to cover when things are tight as they always are early on(or in the first 2 to 4 years of your business). black people for the most part can't attain such wealth to have enough to do this. we're not talking about one offs here and there. we're talking about us as a GROUP. on average we aint got da doe like that. and can't get it hence this article.

wash, rinse, repeat.

White person has a leg up because someone who looks like him his hiring in every sector on every level. he can easily move up and around for the same reason. no matter how smart or not so smart he/she is. their are quite a few unitelligent managers that are wh... how so? They Fail up. thats how. You can't do that mr and mrs black person. the only way you excel is to get lucky, and work 3 times as hard and be 3 times as smart. THEN and only then can you make something slightly happen. So lets be real. how many human beings are 3 times smarter and have the work ethic gene to work 3 times as hard as the average guy? Not many. thats why most people of all races are "AVERAGE." so you're asking for a miracle out of these people. not going to happen. so back to square one for them they go.
