DC and WB Developing Jaime Reyes 'Blue Beetle' Latino Superhero Movie

DC and Warner Bros. are developing their first Latino superhero movie about Jaime Reyes, aka the “Blue Beetle,” individuals with knowledge of the project exclusively tells TheWrap.

Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote Universal’s “Scarface,” has been tapped to write the screenplay. Dunnet-Alocer also wrote the upcoming “Miss Bala” remake for Sony. Zev Foreman is executive producing for Warner Bros.

In the comics, Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes is the third character to assume the mantle of the Blue Beetle after Dan Garret and Ted Kord. Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, the character made his first appearance in the comics in 2006’s “Infinite Crisis” #5. His own monthly series debuted two months later with “Blue Beetle” #1 in May 2006.

Jaime Reyes discovered the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school with two of his best friends Paco and Brenda, half-buried in a disused lot. Reyes took the scarab home, curious as to what it might be. That night, the scarab came alive, and grafted itself to the base of Jaime’s spine, and provided him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor which can be modified to enhance his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings and shields.

While DC has had Latino characters in its universe, (Jay Hernandez as El Diablo in “Suicide Squad,” and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya in the soon to be filming “Birds of Prey”), this will be the first stand-alone title to feature a Latino lead.

According to the MPAA, in 2017, Hispanic/Latino audiences had the highest per-capita attendance at the movies, going to the movie an average of 4.5 times a year. Latinos make up 18 percent of the population, and they buy 24 percent of the movie tickets sold in the United States. It is also worth noting, superhero movies tend to draw the most diverse audiences as Latinos made up 22 percent of the audience for “Wonder Woman” and 21 percent of the audience for “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
They should've capitalized on his and Young Justice's popularity YEARS ago but better late than never

Ted hasn't been THE Blue Beetle for over a decade. In all DC media beyond comics (aka the DC media the average person actually knows), Jaime Reyes has been the Blue Beetle and Ted has been either absent or dead.

:mjlol: @ suggesting Ted Kord is on the same level as Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne, or even Eddie Brock. Ted was a D-List character known primarily for being a Justice League spinoff, and then in the versions of the main Justice League that no one liked. Hell, a lot of his fans didn't even care that much about him before Maxwell Lord gave his brain a view of the room.

Outside of a select group of fans, most people don't have the same attachment to Ted as Beetle that they do with, say, Peter and Spider-Man because before Jaime most people had no attachment to Blue Beetle period. A quick look at the Blue Beetle character since Jaime's introduction.

All "Blue Beetle" comics: Jaime Reyes is the star, Ted makes appearances or is totally absent.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Jaime Reyes is the main Blue Beetle and one of the main supporting characters; Ted appears in like 2 episodes
Smallville: Jaime Reyes, no Ted
Teen Titans animated movies: Jaime Reyes, no Ted
Young Justice: Jaime Reyes. Ted dies off screen before the second season even starts.
Injustice: Jaime is a playable character in the sequel. Ted only appears in the comics (and he's dead).
Justice League Action: Jaime Reyes. No Ted.
DC Superhero Girls: Jaime Reyes. No Ted.

Sorry breh, but Jaime has completely usurped the role of Blue Beetle.

If there's one thing DC tries to do that I give them credit for, it's putting paint where it ain't :ehh:

They did the female led movie first, with 'Wonder Woman' before Marvel got Carol Danvers out there and they did the underwater movie with 'Aquman' while Marvel doesn't really have one until they get the Namor rights back

They're gunning for that diverse audience with this. No way Cyborg is pulling Black Panther numbers, so they'll look to appeal to a different demographic

If they do it right, they'll eat off the Hispanic community like crazy :ohhh:

This is another case of the "I can't see beyond myself and my opinions and acknowledge the rest of the world" mindset that too many people have these days.

It's smart. 1. They have to start differentiating themselves from Marvel, and 2. DC's more diverse projects have been their most successful. I mean, anyone questioning why they are doing Birds of Prey or the new Batwoman and Stargirl shows needs to look into just how big DC Superhero Girls has been for them.

The mere concept of Blue Beetle lets them do something a little from the norm. An alien invasion story starring a Latino kid growing up in El Paso, Texas? We don't get movies like that period, let alone supehero flicks.
If no one gave a fukk about them they wouldn't be getting movies

Every time a Blue Beetle anything comes up at DC, no one even questions who they're talking about at this point.

Streets got nothing but love for young Reyes.
