I was too young when he was huge but how much were people hyping him up? He definitely would have been a big star since he could make catchy songs and could dance but of course the drugs ruined everything.
Bobby was unstoppable in 1988/9. Hell, Dont Be Cruel was the biggest selling album in the U.S. in 1989 (Yes, bigger than any country, pop, r&b artists album that year according to Billboard). I don't know what happened after that. He tried to follow up with the Bobby album in 1992, but New Jack Swing was dying and Hip-Hop Soul was coming into it's place along with tons of new acts (specifically groups and bands like: Tony Toni Tone got super big in 1993, Jodeci in 1991, Mint Condition, En Vogue, TLC, SVW, Shai, Silk, Boyz II Men etc). Sheeit even Michael Jackson had to jump on Bobby Browns jock and borrow Teddy Riley and make a new jack swing album in 1991.
Good thing New Edition came back together in 1996 like Voltron for the Home Again album, Otherwise they would of been done back in 1993 (All the Johnny Gill, BBD and Ralph joints in the 1992/3 era either flopped or went Gold at best, when their previous albums were all at least platinum or better).
Also Gangsta rap got big around that time too, and that played apart somewhat.
Yep. Fall of 1996 was no joke. I remember like it was yesterday. New Edition's Home Again, Blackstreet's Another Level, Mint Condition's Definition of A Band and Tony Toni Tones House of Music...all dropped and are all classic. Good times.....Home Again is classic. Every song on that album was damn near single-worthy
1 of the last great R&B albums
LMAO. Once he lost the gumby haircut he just couldnt keep up with the newcomers like R Kelly and them.Bobby Brown had a 2 year run where he at the top of the game. The "Don't Be Cruel" album was a great mix of contemporary R&B and Hip-Hop. To follow that up with "On Our Own" (which is probably my favorite Bobby Brown song) was a nice look...having it be on the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack help expose him to a bigger audience.
By the time he came back in '92 he was already. I will say he was pretty good on NE "Home Again" album but it wasn't the same.
