Only America? It's the same story in most developed countries, because when you have an extremely low amount of income, fast foods/processed foods are the cheapest and most accessible options.

Because processed food is so much cheaper than veggies. You can go to mcdonalds and get burgers, fries and a drink for $3, but a salad and water will cost you $10.
