The issue is the food we eat. It makes us fat to the point where people think it's normal to have to engage in excessive exercise in order to NOT be fat. Think about that, most people have to work to not be fat. That's not ordinary or natural. And that's not to excuse being overweight but when the majority of your population has the same issue there is a problem.

28% of Americans are meeting physical activity guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a study from the agency released Thursday that also found Americans' amount of exercise varied widely based on their geographic location and whether they lived in a rural or urban area.
Most people don't exercise regularly too and that's also a big part of the equation. Equally important is what you put into your body. Point is, I'm about to go pick up a pizza and I won't feel bad about eating it because I balance a good diet with routine exercise.
A lot of people want to "diet" their way to a good body without having to endure any physical activity in return. It doesn't work like that and never has throughout our history. We've only recently become sedentary creatures because our lifestyle promotes it now.
