the AIDS crisis in brazil was deftly handled by public health sectors of the government in the 80s, making the country a worldwide leader in the fight against HIV and treatment for AIDS
today there's a small scare, probably ironically kickstarted by the programs working really well, since young people felt they could relax and slacked off a little. it was made worse by evangelical politicians blocking safe sex (especially for gay men, by far the most vulnerable to HIV infection in brazil) PSAs.
still, there's less than a million living cases in a country of 200 million people
